Kensington, MD

Historic charm. Modern build.

Welcome to Kensington

Tree-lined streets, a walkable historic downtown, and easy access to every major commuter route in the region. Kensington offers a rare balance of small-town character and everyday convenience — the perfect backdrop for a new construction home built to fit the scale of the street around it.

Kensington is one of Montgomery County's oldest planned communities, known for its Victorian architecture, its antique shops, and a downtown that still feels like a small town even with D.C. just down the road. Residents enjoy a walkable core, strong schools, and quick access to Rock Creek Park, White Flint's restaurants and shops, and every major route in and out of the region. It's a neighborhood where farmers market Saturdays, tree-lined dog walks, and an easy commute are all part of the same routine.

History

Kensington was founded in 1894 by Washington developer Brainard Warner, who envisioned a garden suburb inspired by London's Kensington Gardens. The town grew up around the B&O Railroad's Metropolitan Branch, first as a summer retreat for Washington residents escaping the city heat, then as a year-round commuter suburb once the streetcar and rail lines made the trip into D.C. practical. Much of Warner's original layout survives today, and the historic core was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Architecture & Character

Kensington's streets are lined with Victorian, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival homes set on landscaped lots, a legacy of Warner's original garden-suburb plan. The town's historic downtown is anchored by Antique Row on Howard Avenue, one of the largest concentrations of antique shops in the D.C. metro area, along with the Noyes Library for Young Children, a Saturday farmers market at the old train station, and a calendar of community events that runs through the year.
